Huangcun Ah Ju, set against the backdrop of the picturesque natural scenery of Huangcun, follows the story of a Huizhou woman named ‘Ah Ju’. It depicts her journey through the selection of a spouse, a new marriage, her husband’s departure for business, her brave fight against thieves to protect her home, and finally, the triumphant return of her husband. The performance showcases the resilience, bravery, charm, and emotional depth of Huizhou women, as well as the hardships faced by Huizhou merchants abroad.
Through four acts titled ‘Sweet New Marriage’, ‘Reluctant Farewell’, ‘Guarding the Home’, and ‘Eternal Love’, the performance artistically recreates the diligence, courage, commitment, and tenacity of Huizhou women. It subverts the traditional image of Huizhou women as enduring and lonely, transforming them into charming, witty, and brave figures that are refreshing to the audience.
The show operates year-round from Tuesday to Sunday, from 19:30 to 20:30, and is closed all day on Mondays. It is also open during New Year’s Day, Spring Festival, Qingming Festival, Labor Day, Dragon Boat Festival, Mid-Autumn Festival, and National Day, from 19:30 to 20:30. Children under 1.2 meters (not including) in height enter for free.
