Situated 4 kilometers northwest of Lincheng Town, the Jasmine Pavilion is located within the current Lingao Normal School. Originally established as a school by Xie Huo, the county magistrate of Lingao during the Song Dynasty, the pavilion is named after the many jasmine flowers Xie Huo planted in the courtyard.
In the 18th year of the Shaoxing era (AD 1146), Hu Quan, a prime minister who was demoted to Hainan, stayed at the Jasmine Pavilion for a while when he passed through Lingao and was welcomed by Xie Huo. It was here that Hu Quan wrote a poem titled ‘Inscribed on the Jasmine Pavilion,’ which greatly increased the pavilion’s fame.
According to the records in the Annals of Lingao County, a man named Dai Dingshi from Botun Village in Lingao County was once guided by Hu Quan, which inspired him to study diligently. He later passed the imperial examinations and served in the Ministry of Personnel. The Jasmine Pavilion has always been regarded as a center for the dissemination of Central Plains culture in Lingao.
