Lao Mei Green Stone Troughs

Lao Mei is a quintessential coastal fishing village located in the Lao Mei area of Shimen District on the northern coast. The scenery is breathtakingly beautiful. However, the unique ‘green stone troughs’ usually only appear in April and May. During the winter when the northeast monsoon prevails, the spray from the waves moistens the rock surfaces of the troughs, giving rise to a vast expanse of green seaweed, thus creating the astonishing ‘green stone troughs’ coastal landscape. Subsequently, the seaweed disappears under the scorching summer sun, so the time to see this spectacle is very brief. This rare natural phenomenon often attracts professional photographers from all over Taiwan to capture the beautiful scenery and take wedding photos. Visitors who wish to photograph the area should first check the daily ebb and flow times of the Shimen area on the meteorological bureau website to avoid missing the green coast beauty due to high tide submerging the stone troughs. The site is open all year round, 24 hours a day. It is essential to note that the green stone troughs are facing an existential crisis due to the trampling of tourists. Therefore, visitors are encouraged to enjoy the view from the beach and avoid stepping on the green stone troughs, especially as the area above the troughs is quite slippery and dangerous. Falling and getting injured would be a great loss.
