Haikou Zhongshan Road is a nationally renowned street with distinctive character.
The shophouses here are imbued with Lingnan and Southeast Asian features.
Most of these shophouses were built by overseas Chinese returning from Southeast Asia in the early 20th century, drawing on the architectural styles of the region. The buildings are generally not tall, with two or three stories being the norm, and when a dozen of these shophouses are connected, they form a very impressive sight. The long corridors in front of the shophouses link the entire district, providing shelter from the harsh sun and heavy rain for pedestrians, and also serving as open spaces for merchants to attract customers.
