Nestled on the hillside is a spring, not grand in size, yet it never dries up throughout the year, known as the Longquan Spring. This spring is acclaimed as the best in the world, hence the name Longquan Mountain, which has now been expanded into Longshan Park. The Yao River gently flows at the foot of the mountain, creating a significant landscape known as ‘Dragon Mountain and Shun Water’. Longquan Mountain not only wins over visitors with its beautiful scenery and serene environment but also contains a wealth of historical and cultural significance. It is said that Emperor Gaozong of the Song Dynasty once climbed this mountain to drink from the spring, finding the water to be sweet and refreshing. He took a small jar to carry the water away and praised the spring as well as the scenery, leading to the construction of the ‘Even Better Pavilion’.
Upon entering the South Gate of Longshan Park and ascending the steps, one can see at the mid-level of the mountain a large plaque inscribed with ‘Culturally Renowned State’ by the Qing Dynasty calligrapher Weng Qinglong. Further along, one arrives at the ‘Monument to the Hometown of Four Sages’, built by later generations to commemorate the four Yuyao sages: Yan Ziling, Wang Yangming, Zhu Shunshui, and Huang Lichou.
Located on the southern hillside, the Zhongtian Pavilion, once a lecture site for Mr. Wang Shouren (Wang Yangming), is also known as the Yangming Academy. It was built during the Five Dynasties and named after the Tang Dynasty poet Fang Gan’s verse ‘The air in the middle of heaven is crisp, and the stars are close’. It now serves as the Lizhou Documentation Center.
On the mountain, there are also the Longquan Well, Longquan Chamber, Ziling Pavilion, Yangming Pavilion, Shunshui Pavilion, Lizhou Pavilion, Zhiyang Heng, Zhile Pool, and Wenchang Pavilion, as well as numerous memorials and inscriptions dedicated to local worthies. The Tongji Bridge, dating back to the Northern Song Dynasty, and the Shunjiang Tower from the Yuan Dynasty, located at the foot of Longquan Mountain, together form the scenery described as ‘A long rainbow lies on the waves, and a flying pavilion commands the flow’. While enjoying the natural scenery, visitors can also increase their knowledge and cultivate their sentiments. The park is open all year round from 8:00 to 17:00.
