Luohan Temple

Luohan Temple is located in Luohanwu, Bingchang Village, situated in a secluded valley.
In the middle of the mountain gate sits the Maitreya Buddha with a big belly (Hemp Bag Monk). It is made of granite, carrying a yellow bag on his back and greeting people with a smiling face. There is an inscribed board above it, named ‘All Are Happy’. There is a couplet on the temple gate: ‘Laughing at all ancient and modern affairs, seeing those who come and go.’

Passing through the courtyard is the Luohan Hall. This hall is a building from the Qing Dynasty. Inside the hall, there are granite carvings of Sakyamuni and sixteen Luohan statues with childlike faces from the Qing Dynasty. The Luohan statues are roughly carved, with simple shapes and different expressions, giving people a sense of solemnity and simplicity, with the style remaining from the prosperous Tang Dynasty. This special Luohan statue shape is rare in China.

Next to Luohan Temple, there are two famous fragrant camphor trees standing side by side by the stream. The two trees are intertwined by an ancient wisteria with a diameter of more than 60 centimeters, like a cloud dragon playing with a pearl. It is called ‘The Intertwining of Wisteria and Camphor Trees’, which is a magnificent spectacle.
