Ma Yunchu’s Former Residence is a late Qing Dynasty style residence, constructed by Ma Yunchu’s father, Ma Disheng, during the Guangxu period, for the Ma family and the master-apprentices of the ‘Ma Shu Ji’ distillery he established. Ma Yunchu was born here on May 24, 1882, and spent his childhood and adolescence in this place. The residence is located on the ancient street of Renmin Street in Pukou Town, Shengzhou. This traditional Jiangnan residence covers an area of 628 square meters, including 40 rooms in the side buildings. It faces north and south, with the north side facing the street, and the door opens to a shop. In the old days, when Pukou suffered from many water disasters, the wine jars sold in the shop were stored upstairs in the residence. To bear the weight, a round wooden beam was added horizontally under the floor of the upper floor. Upon entering the main gate, one passes through a long corridor leading straight to the three-part courtyard house, all built on a vertical axis. Each part of the house is two stories high, with white walls, green tiles, wooden pillars, and blue bricks, featuring a hard mountain top. The second and third parts have corridors around the upper floors, commonly known as the ‘walking horse building.’ Between each part, there are courtyards paved with pebbles, with side rooms on both sides. Ma Yunchu was born in the fourth room on the ground floor of the second part. Later, Ma’s bedroom was located on the first floor on the west side. The existing furniture and household items related to the former residence are arranged and displayed in their original state. Open from January 1st to December 31st, 09:00-17:00.
