Marshal’s Zen Garden

The Marshal’s Zen Garden, once serving as a Japanese officers’ club, was later transformed into a guesthouse for the Japanese Kamikaze Special Attack Force during the latter stages of World War II. After the war, it became the residence for Zhang Xueliang under house arrest. Although the Zen Garden’s architecture has been restored to its original state, the interior has changed significantly. Former master bedrooms, guest rooms, studies, and dressing rooms have been converted into a restaurant named ‘Hanqing Hall’. The restaurant’s style is a fusion of Chinese, Japanese, and Western elements, featuring Chinese redwood carved tables and chairs, Japanese tatami mats, and Western dining tables. If you wish to explore Marshal’s past traces, you may visit the restaurant within the Zen Garden. This restaurant, originally the master bedroom, has a wall-mounted photograph of Zhang Xueliang and Miss Zhao from 1947 in their Taiwan residence, flanked by inscriptions by Yu Youren: ‘Nurture the righteous energy of heaven and earth, emulate the perfect people of ancient and modern times’. Outside the restaurant, the ‘Historical Corridor’ displays numerous black-and-white photographs of Zhang Xueliang, silently narrating his secluded life in Taiwan where he cultivated orchids, was fascinated by Beijing Opera, and played mahjong. Additionally, the restaurant includes a tea house, and an open-air coffee area that overlooks the entire landscape of Beitou, offering a broad view. Opening hours are as follows: 11:00-21:00 from January 1st to June 30th; closed all day on Mondays from July 1st to August 31st; 11:00-21:00 on Tuesdays to Sundays from July 1st to August 31st; 11:00-21:00 from September 1st to December 31st. Different venues have varying opening hours. The aforementioned business hours are for the Marshal’s Exhibition Hall. The opening hours for other venues in the Marshal’s Zen Garden are as follows: [Hanqing Cuisine] 12:00-14:30; 18:00-21:00. [Double Happiness Bathhouse] 11:00-21:00. [Xiao Liu Tea Shop] 12:00-18:00. Business status changes frequently, it is recommended to consult the scenic area in advance, and the specific business status is subject to the actual opening on the day. A mandatory tip for visiting is a cleaning fee of NT$150 per person [groups must book at least 2 days in advance]. Except for booking meals or hot springs, on-site free visits are not allowed, and a visiting cleaning fee is required per person, which can be deducted from consumption within the garden (excluding some items).
