“Sailing down to Dongyang with the sound of oars, returning to the boat into the land of Shan. The green mountains seem never-ending, and the green waters flow on for how long.” (From the Tang Dynasty poet Cui Hao’s ‘Boat Journey into Shan’) The place where the poet once sailed into Shan is now the Nanshan Lake Scenic Area, located upstream of the Shanxi River in Shengzhou. Nanshan Lake was formed by the damming of the Nanshan River (West River), a tributary of the Shanxi River. The towering dam, like a colossal lock, abruptly holds back the dragon-like Nanshan River, creating a landscape of high gorges and a flat lake. From the dam, one can look out to see the lake enveloped by green mountains. There are many islands in the lake, and the water is clear and mirror-like all year round. If interested, one might consider stepping into a flat boat and sailing on the lake. However, the best spot to overlook the entire Nanshan Lake Scenic Area is a four-sided two-story building facing north and south in Gui Men Village, north of Gui Men Township – the Gui Men Building. Climbing the building and looking into the distance, one can see the undulating mountains and the calm lake waters below. The scenic area is divided into six major scenic spots: Nanshan Lake, Volcanic Crater, Glacial Valley, Tianxing Pond, Gold and Silver Bay, and Lumen Academy. Attractions such as volcanic bombs, glacial kettles, glacial erratics, ancient pine forests, and the Jinsi Pond Waterfall are all quite distinctive. The scenic area is open all year round from 7:30 to 18:00.
