It is said that Qianduo was the Bagua Array set up by Yue Fei, the then governor of Taizhou, during his battle against the Jurchen troops. With an average elevation of less than 2 meters, Xinghua is prone to waterlogging disasters in its farmlands. Therefore, local residents would dig up the mud from the water in low-lying areas during the dry season and pile it up in higher places, creating small island-like fields known as ‘duotian’. These fields vary in size and shape, are not connected to each other, and can only be traversed by boat. At a glance, the crisscrossing rivers and canals, with each separated field resembling a floating island, have earned the area the reputation of ‘the land of ten thousand islands’. Around the time of the Qingming Festival, when the rapeseed flowers bloom, the blue sky, green water, and ‘golden islands’ create a magnificent scene described as ‘rivers with myriad bends and waters, fields without a single duotian without yellow flowers’.
