Ningbo Reception Temple is a historic and renowned Buddhist monastery, originally established during the Tang Dynasty by the Venerable Master Yuanhui. Over time, it has been home to numerous eminent monks and has flourished with a strong following, becoming a grand and expansive Buddhist complex. Reception Temple, along with Tian Tong and King Asoka, were once the three great pillars of Buddhism in the region, collectively known as the Buddhist land by the sea and sky.
In September 1909, at the request of the Ningbo Buddhist community, Master Yuanying took up residence at Ningbo Reception Temple, marking his first position as the abbot of a monastery. After becoming the abbot, he established a Buddhist lecture institute within the temple, which was renamed Reception Temple in 1931.

The temple’s current layout includes the mountain gate, bell tower, drum tower, Hall of the Heavenly Kings, Hall of the Three Buddhas, Mahavira Hall, Ancestral Hall, Jia Lan Hall, and Yi Hou Hall, among other structures. The temple is open to visitors from 4:00 to 17:00 all year round.
