Sea Judgement South Sky Stone Carving

The Haipan NanTian Stone is the earliest cliff inscription within the Tianya Haijiao scenic area. The combination of stone and characters conveys a sense of primitive vigor and timeless eternity.

In the 53rd year of the Kangxi Emperor’s reign (1714), three imperial astronomers were ordered by the emperor to inscribe ‘Haipan NanTian’ on the seaside of Xiama Ling. After verification and recognition, the three astronomers were identified as Miao Shou from the Imperial Astronomical Bureau, Chuo Erdai from the Ministry of Rites, and the French Jesuit missionary Tang Shangxian. ‘Haipan NanTian’ is a surveying relic from the ‘Imperial Complete Map’ and serves as a historical testament to Sino-French scientific exchanges in the 18th century.
