Shaobo Town is a market town by the ancient Grand Canal and one of the five major towns in Jiangdu District. Due to the development of modern civilization, Shaobo Town has undergone great changes. Now there are the old street and the new street. But what remains unchanged are the ancient Grand Canal, the ancient flagstone street, old alleys, old houses and the large iron ox for suppressing water. The junction of the old street and the canal is the ‘Grand Wharf’ in the town center. The three characters ‘Grand Wharf’ were inscribed by Emperor Qianlong. It is as famous as the ‘Small Wharf’ in Zhenjiang and the ‘Imperial Wharf’ in Yangzhou. Emperor Qianlong made six southern tours and stopped at Shaobo six times, indirectly indicating the importance of Shaobo Wharf on the Grand Canal at that time. There is an ancient flagstone street three li long from north to south on the old street. Along both sides of the ancient street, there are currently more than 20 ancient houses from the Ming and Qing Dynasties, such as the hometown of Dong Xun, a minister of four departments in the Qing Dynasty, Xu Family Mansion, Wang Family Mansion, and Four-corner Tower. There are historical and cultural relics well-known far and near, such as Xie Gong Shrine commemorating Xie An, Yunchuan Pavilion, Patrol Department, Great King Temple, Gantang Temple, Imperial Wharf, Longevity Palace, etc. Various ancient stone tablets unearthed successively are also being restored and exhibited in concentration. There is also the memorial hall of the sixth battle in the Seven Battles and Seven Victories in Central Jiangsu. There is the rare ancient Gantang tree and the iron ox for suppressing water with a history of more than 300 years. Open all year round and open all day.
