The Sheng Gu Temple is located in Tingshan Village, Xiwu Sub-district. It was built to commemorate three women who provided water to relieve the heat for the Song army soldiers resisting the invasion of Yuan soldiers. It is equivalent to a modern ‘model of supporting the army’. It is also called Sheng Gu Niangniang Temple. In the old days, the lantern festival and opera performances at the Sheng Gu Temple at the beginning of each year were very lively. From the 15th to the 16th day of the first lunar month, the temple fair of Sheng Gu Temple would have opera performances lasting ‘from dusk to dawn’, that is, all through the night. Guests watch in the first half of the night, while locals watch in the second half. It not only ushers in the morning but also ushers in spring. There is a saying that goes, ‘It is better to be a daughter of the people of Miaoshan than a daughter-in-law of the people of Miaoshan.’ That is to say, during the Spring Festival, daughters who come back to their parents’ home to watch operas don’t need to do anything but just watch operas and have meals, without having to worry about anything. But the daughters-in-law are very busy. They not only have to arrange the beds for guests but also make midnight snacks for guests, so they have no time to watch operas. Therefore, there is also the slang saying, ‘The girls of Miaoshan are opera fans, while the daughters-in-law of Miaoshan are like fire tenders (pronounced as ‘ban’).’
