According to legend, the Japanese, in their quest to exploit the valuable timber resources of the Alishan region, heavily logged the ancient red cypress giant trees
Shortly thereafter, the loggers began to fall ill and die mysteriously, leading the Japanese to believe that the tree spirits were causing the misfortune
As a result, they built this stone tower to suppress the tree spirits and to offer sacrifices to the felled red cypress
The tower is open to visitors all year round, with full-day access
