Songzi Laifeng Bridge, also known as the ‘Sunny Rain Bridge’ by locals, is located on the east side of Xiaotong Street in the Xitang Scenic Area. It connects to the Misty Rain Corridor and stands at the heart of the ancient town’s attractions. The bridge is renowned for its unique design and the symbolic meaning of ‘bringing prosperity and offspring’, making it a must-visit among the many ancient bridges in Xitang. This three-arch stone slab bridge is approximately 10 meters wide, with a canopy on top that provides shade and shelter from the rain. It features railings and long stone benches on both sides, offering a perfect spot for weary travelers to rest and enjoy the view or take photos. Notably, the bridge is divided into two parts by a central flower wall. The southern side features steps, symbolizing the continuous rise of men, while the northern side has a ramp suitable for the small steps of ancient women with bound feet, symbolizing a stable household. To this day, there is a saying that ‘couples who cross this bridge, if from the south, will have offspring, and if from the north, will bring prosperity’. Couples seeking children may wish to walk across for good fortune. Additionally, Songzi Laifeng Bridge is one of the two boat piers in the ancient town. Boarding a traditional wooden boat, whether for a daytime cruise or a night tour of the ancient town, is an excellent experience. The bridge is open all year round, accessible 24/7. Tips for visitors: 1. On weekends or holidays, you may encounter local opera enthusiasts entertaining themselves on the bridge with music and singing, adding a distinctive Jiangnan flavor. 2. There are many graffiti and messages left by tourists on the flower wall. It is advised to maintain a civilized demeanor and refrain from defacing the bridge.
