St. Francis Xavier’s Church, built in 1928, features white exterior walls, elliptical windows, and a bell tower. In front of the church stands a monument commemorating the local victory over pirates in 1910. The church once housed a silver reliquary containing the arm relic of St. Francis Xavier, which was moved in 1978 and is now preserved at St. Joseph’s Seminary. St. Francis Xavier arrived in this region over 400 years ago with missionaries and passed away on a nearby island in 1552. Additionally, the church originally contained a relic of the 1835 fire at the Ruins of St. Paul’s, which included 59 Japanese and 14 Vietnamese victims, and this relic has been transferred to the Catholic Art Museum behind the Ruins of St. Paul’s. The church is open to visitors year-round from 09:30 to 17:30. Although it is an ordinary church, it has become a pilgrimage site for many fans of the Korean drama ‘Palace’ due to its appearance in the final episode. After enjoying the egg tarts from Lord Stow’s Bakery, take a leisurely stroll down Rua de Cinco de Outubro, and you will naturally find your way here!
