St. Lawrence’s Church

St. Lawrence’s Church, also known as the Windward Hall, was established in 1560 and is one of the oldest churches in Macau. In the past, people would come here to pray for favorable winds and calm seas before setting sail. The church is located in what was once an upscale residential area, which is reflected in its beautiful and exquisite architecture. The classical European style is enhanced with Baroque elements. The church, imbued with Portuguese flair, stands on a high platform with two rows of stone steps leading to the church’s main entrance, flanked by two bell towers—one for telling time and the other for ringing during Mass. The church’s pointed roof is covered with glazed tiles, featuring a Chinese-style golden roof. The portal features a cross, and the yellow and white facade is adorned with simple decorative lines. St. Lawrence’s Church is not far from the A-Ma Temple and is close to Nam Van and Sai Van, making it a popular spot for local couples. The vicinity also boasts numerous bars, restaurants, and a musical fountain, making it an ideal place for friends and family gatherings. Opening hours are from 7:00 to 21:00 on Saturdays and Sundays, and from 7:00 to 18:00 on weekdays. Accessibility services include disabled parking and accessible entrances. Visitors are advised to maintain silence and respect local customs during their visit.
