The Statue of Jorge Álvares is located in a small public garden bearing the same name to the northwest of the New Yaohan Department Store. It is the work of the sculptor Euclides Vaz and was inaugurated in 1954. Álvares is renowned as the first European to arrive in China via sea routes. You will see a depiction of a middle-aged Álvares draped in a cloak and holding a broadsword. He stands in front of a traditional Portuguese stone cross, with his right hand pointing towards the sky. This is an interesting statue and character of a Portuguese explorer, and it is worth visiting the monument. The monument is open all year round and accessible at all times of the day.
