Straits Highway

The Straits Highway was opened to traffic in May 1932 and was initially named the Coastal Road. After the war, it was renamed as the Straits Highway. The northern starting point is Su’ao Town in Yilan County, and the southern endpoint is Hualien City in Hualien County. The Coastal Road is 118 kilometers long, built along the coastline, and occasionally meanders into flat river delta areas. Along the way, one can enjoy the Pacific Ocean views and cliffs, making it a world-renowned scenic highway. The Straits Highway offers beautiful sea views and cliffs, with many scenic spots along the way. One notable site is the Qingshui Cliffs, with the highest peak of Qingshui Mountain at 2407 meters above sea level. Additionally, there is the Guanyin Pavilion. In September 1984, a massive Guanyin stone fell, penetrating the ground by 2.5 meters. Due to the name of the area being Guanyin, the Guanyin stone was engraved with the image of Guanyin Bodhisattva, and a Guanyin Pavilion and a lotus pond were constructed. Please note that the specific opening hours and business status are subject to the daily opening conditions. Important tips: During typhoons, the Straits Highway may be closed preemptively; avoid driving at night after continuous heavy rain.
