The Great Buddha in the First Grotto in Jiangnan

This Buddha statue is the essence of the cultural landscape in the Grand Buddha Temple. It was carved during the Qi and Liang dynasties of the Southern Dynasties (486 – 516). Monks Hu, Chu, and You carved it successively over three decades. The Buddha seat of the stone Maitreya statue is 1.91 meters high, the Buddha body is 13.74 meters high, the head is 4.87 meters high, the ears are 2.8 meters long, the mouth is 1.28 meters wide, and the distance between the knees is 10.6 meters. The Buddha statue has delicate bones and a clear appearance, with a broad forehead, a high nose bridge, slender eyebrows and eyes, a square chin and thin lips, and drooping ears. The carving is fine, the lines are elegant and smooth, and the demeanor is elegant. It expresses the Buddha’s serene, wise, firm, and transcendent inner world. Looking carefully can make people calm and contemplative, with a profound artistic conception. The proportions of various parts of the Buddha statue use the perspective principle. The head is deliberately enlarged so that when viewers look up at the Buddha’s face, they can receive enlightenment and be baptized. But the proportion of enlargement must be well grasped without any sense of disproportion. It is an astonishing creation to handle this so well 1500 years ago. The Great Buddha is a great artistic and religious creation at that time, representing the high level of craftsmanship of that era. The age and value of the statue can be compared with the Yungang Grottoes and Longmen Grottoes. It is the only great achievement of early grotto statues in the south of our country. Opening hours: Open all year round from 07:00 to 17:00. The specific business status is subject to the opening situation on that day.
