The Songtao Tianhu Scenic Area is located 14 kilometers southeast of Danzhou urban area, upstream of the Nandu River. It spans three cities and counties including Danzhou, Baisha, and Qiongzhong. It is the source of life for the people of Hainan and one of the top ten reservoirs in the country, enjoying the reputation of ‘the bright pearl of the treasure island’. The Songtao Tianhu was built in 1958 and took 10 years to complete. It is one of the larger earth dam projects in China. The earth dam is 80.1 meters high and 760 meters long, blocking the surging Nandu River in the Nanyang and Fanjia Yang river valleys. The water surface area of Tianhu is 130.5 square kilometers, and there are many small islands in the lake. The total reservoir capacity is 3.34 billion cubic meters. It stores the rainwater from a 1400-square-kilometer area on both banks of the upstream of the Nandu River and forms a unified irrigation system, irrigating a large area of land in the northwest and north of Hainan Island. The opening hours and specific business status are subject to the opening situation on the day.
