Tianshi Mansion

Tianshi Mansion is located in Shangqing Town, serving as the residence for generations of Zhang Tianshi, originally built at the foot of Longhu Mountain and later relocated to Shangqing. The title of Zhang Tianshi has been passed down to the 63rd generation, making it one of the longest family lineages in China to be officially recognized by emperors. There is a saying among the people, ‘In the north, there is Confucius, and in the south, there is Zhang Tianshi.’ Zhang Tianshi, whose real name is Zhang Daoling, is said to be the eighth-generation descendant of Zhang Liang. It is believed that he was nine feet and three inches tall, with thick eyebrows and a large face, exuding a very martial presence. During the reign of Emperor Guangwu of the Han Dynasty, he was born in Tianmu Mountain, as his mother dreamt of the Kui Star before giving birth to him. Zhang Daoling was exceptionally intelligent from a young age, understanding the Tao Te Ching by the age of seven, and mastering astronomy, geography, and the Hexagrams of the Yi Jing. As an adult, he practiced diligently in the deep mountains and soon achieved enlightenment. He once refined an elixir at Longhu Mountain, which took three years to complete. Soon after, he encountered divine guidance and cultivated high-level Taoist arts, capable of exorcising demons and curing diseases, attracting tens of thousands to follow him. Zhang Daoling organized them into a Taoist group. It is said that on the ninth day of the ninth lunar month in the first year of Yongshou during the reign of Emperor Huan of the Eastern Han Dynasty, Zhang Daoling was named Zhengyi Zhenren by immortals and ascended to immortality. The Taoism he founded continues to this day, and because he required initiates to contribute five pecks of rice, it is also known as ‘Wudoumi Teaching.’ Later generations honored him as Zhang Tianshi, and the title of Zhang Tianshi has been specially permitted by emperors to be hereditary. The current Zhang Tianshi is the 63rd descendant of Zhang Daoling. Tianshi Mansion covers an area of 50,000 square meters, with more than 500 rooms, featuring golden and splendid pavilions and halls, countless winding paths and corridors, towering ancient trees, a quiet environment, and very beautiful scenery. It retains the traditional Chinese mansion style and also has some characteristics of feudal government offices, maintaining a distinct Zhengyi Taoist style in its layout. Every year in early October, the Longhu Mountain Taoist Cultural Festival is held here, where visitors can watch Taoist ritual performances. The site is open all year round from 08:00 to 17:00.
