Located at No. 77 Yanyue Street, Xu’s Residence within the Tianyi Pavilion · Yuehu Scenic Area, this residence is a Qing Dynasty hard mountain top architectural style. The porch’s moon-shaped beam is plain, with brackets supported on the columns, and the beam frame is of the穿透斗式. The owner of this residence is a descendant of the famous Qing Dynasty scholar Xu Shi-dong, who once set up the Youxue Studio, where the ‘Collected Works of Xu Shi-dong’ was engraved and circulated. Xu Shi-dong (1814-1873), originally styled Yunsheng, later changed to Dingyu, also known as Tongshu, and nicknamed Danzhai and Liuquan, was a native of the late Qing Dynasty’s Yincheng District (today’s Haishu District). He was known for his saying, ‘Because of books, he was poor, having experienced all kinds of hardships. As a Yuehu scholar, he never changed his true nature.’ He was an accomplished book collector, a simple scholar, a poet, a calligrapher, and a distinguished teacher during the late Qing period. His scholarly contributions are recognized by the academic community as ‘After the decline of regional academic culture since the times of Quan Zuwang and Shao Jinghan, it was only with the emergence of the Huang father and son and Xu Shi-dong that the declining trend was slightly reversed.’
