The former residence of Xu Shidong is located on the west bank of Yuehu Lake in Ningbo, adjacent to the entrance of Guijings Alley. The ancient house faces east and is designed with five rooms and two lanes, with two stories, and the book collection is housed on the upper floor.
Xu Shidong (1814-1873), styled Dingyu, also known as Tongshu, and nicknamed Liuquan, was a juren in the 26th year of the Daoguang era (1846). Afterwards, he went to Beijing twice for the imperial examinations but was unsuccessful in his ambitions. From then on, he dedicated himself to studying. He collated numerous documents throughout his life, with a particular focus on local literature, including the collation and engraving of the Song and Yuan dynasties’ ‘Six Records of Siming’. His works include ‘Yanyu Tower Collection of Prose’, ‘Yanyu Tower Collection of Poetry’, ‘Yanyu Tower Notes’, and more than thirty other types of writings. He was a scholar, local historian, and book collector in Ningbo.
