Wenchang Tower is located approximately 3 kilometers south of Hepu County, with a history dating back to the Ming Dynasty’s Wanli period, over 300 years ago.
The tower is octagonal, approximately 36 meters in height, with a base of 8.1 meters and an internal diameter of 2.6 meters.
It is a 7-story brick tower with a corbelled eaves design, narrowing from the base upwards, topped with a red gourd. Each level features an east-west ventilation door, namely the Kun door and the Feng door, with the rest being decorative false doors. The tower has a spiral staircase leading upwards inside. The body of the tower is white, with red edges and archways, creating a striking contrast of red and white, simple yet aesthetically pleasing. From the tower, one can enjoy a panoramic view of Beihai. The tower base is about one meter larger than the base seat, constructed with long slabs of stone, also in an octagonal shape. The tower’s structure is entirely made of blue bricks laid in a seam bond, with a surface layer of plaster. The design tapers from the base upwards, with each level becoming narrower and smaller, and a spiral staircase inside leading to the top. At the base of the tower, there is an east-west facing gate, which serves as the entrance and exit. The tower is open to visitors all year round, with 24-hour access. It is important to note that visitors can only view the tower from a close distance and are not allowed to climb the tower.
