Wukang Road: A Historical and Cultural Street in Shanghai

Wukang Road, located in Xuhui District, Shanghai, was originally named after American missionary John F. Ferguson. It connects the bustling Huaihai Middle Road in the north with the tranquil Huashan Road in the south, and is known as a ‘China Historical and Cultural Famous Street’ with 37 historical buildings. Among them, 14 are particularly well-preserved historical buildings, making it a true ‘Celebrity Road’. Strolling along this century-old street, you are surrounded by lush ancient trees and can occasionally spot scattered European-style architecture along the way. The Wukang Building is the iconic structure of Wukang Road, designed by the renowned Hungarian architect Laszlo Hudec. The building features a red brick exterior, corner balconies, and triangular classical pediment windows, reminiscent of the French Renaissance period. Its shape resembles a giant ship waiting to set sail, which explains its old name ‘Normandy Apartment’. Film artists such as Wu Yin, Zheng Junli, and Zhao Dan once lived here, and Kong Xiangxi, daughter of Kong Xiangxi, is now one of the larger property owners here. A succession of former residences of celebrities is a major feature of Wukang Road. Number 113 is the former residence of the literary giant Ba Jin, a quiet and warm old house where Ba Jin lived in Shanghai for the longest time; Number 393 is the former residence of Huang Xing, a British country-style garden house; Number 40 Lane 1 is the former residence of Tang Shaoyi, a Spanish-style detached garden house, retro and atmospheric… In addition to the former residences of celebrities, there are other distinctive old houses here. Number 390 is the SAIC Motor Company Office Building, a small house with a red roof and white walls in Mediterranean style, different from other old houses; Number 99 is the Zheng Guanghe Old House, a detached house with a sharp peak, which looks precious and mysterious under the cover of white high walls and green branches, and the film ‘Lust, Caution’ was filmed here. If you want to savor the past and present of Wukang Road, you may need to spend a whole day here, and there are many coffee shops and restaurants to rest. Located at number 376, Wukang Court is surrounded by three old houses, among the clusters of flowers is a restaurant called Coffee Tree, which is very popular, order a vegetable Panini with a cup of fragrant coffee, very satisfying.
