Xiandu Huanglong Mountain Scenic Area

Huanglong Mountain Scenic Area, located in Chengbei Township, covers an area of 4 square kilometers. It stands tall in the eastern part of the newly constructed plain, with its western side being flat and open, and the eastern, southern, and northern sides surrounded by low hills. Below the mountain ridge, green misty pines embrace it; on the ridge, numerous indescribable strange rocks stand high and close together; beneath the ridge, cliffs resemble drums and screens, stretching for five or six miles. From a distance, it looks like a coiled and wriggling azure dragon.
Within the mountain, there are secluded valleys and deep pools, with ancient trees towering towards the sky. There are attractions such as the Golden Monkey Offering Peach Rock, Pyramid Rock, Eight-Window Cave, Bat Cave, Flying Boat, Iron Shoulder Pole, and Pearl Cave, making it a rare paradise on earth. Surrounded by steep cliffs, the area is strategically important and historically a military stronghold in the northern part of the prefecture. Legend has it that in ancient times, the third son of the Dragon King of the East China Sea was ordered to pay homage to the Jade Palace of Xiandu. Seeing the rivers and streams in the Zhejiang-Fujian area drying up, crops withering, and people suffering, he took pity and secretly brought rain. When the heavens found out, they were furious, and Zhang Tianshi locked the young prince on a flat ground near Xiandu, where, over time, the dormant coiled dragon turned into a mountain. To commemorate the kind-hearted young dragon, people named the mountain Huanglong Mountain.

Huanglong Temple, a northern military stronghold in the prefecture, has been fortified three times in history. The first was under the governor of Chuzhou at the end of the Tang Dynasty, Shi Jianshi; the second was during the transition from the Yuan to Ming Dynasty, with Yuan general Lin Bin and Ming generals Hu Dahai and Geng Zaicheng; the third was during the late Ming Dynasty with Chen Jianhu, Tao De’er, and Ye Zongliu’s rebel forces. Behind Huanglong Temple, under the towering ancient trees and huge rocks, there is a stone tank, which was the collective silver treasury of the peasant rebel army. Near the inverted stone, there is a saying about hidden treasures: ‘In the corner of the rock’s shade, there is gold; in the flat of the rock, there is silver.’ Ascending the mountain path through the dense forest from the silver treasury, one soon reaches the southern ridge of Huanglong Mountain. The ridge is surrounded by peculiar rocks resembling pigs, sheep, lions, and leopards. Looking from the ridge to the outside of the mountain, fields, hills, and villages are clearly visible. A stone carving reads ‘Strange and Bizarre, Not a Boat’ in two large characters, standing majestically against the cliff, with two huge rocks on the cliff, one shaped like a boat, several feet long, wide, and about seven or eight feet thick.

From the main peak, heading east along the mountain ridge, the rocks become even more peculiar, and the peaks more elegant. There are formations like stacks of turtles, a lion guarding, and a shoulder pole standing horizontally, along with Eight Medicine Monks sleeping soundly. Together with the flower and fruit orchards at the foot of the mountain and the Golden Monkey Offering Peach Rock to the north, they form a natural Western Paradise.
