The Xiaodong River is located in Maonan District. It is the mother river of Maoming. It nourishes the land and water, humanities of Maoming and the prosperity and brilliance after Maoming became a city. The Xiaodong River is a cross-border river flowing through Maoming and Zhanjiang cities. It is about 67 kilometers in length. The river is famous for turning into a ‘fiery river’ due to the exploitation of oil shale for oil refining in the 1950s. The Xiaodong River meanders and nourishes the land of Maoming. As the mother river of Maoming, it has witnessed the process of Maoming’s economy and civilization. After years of urban changes, today Maoming has formed a development pattern of ‘one river and two banks’, where high-rise buildings and business districts gather.
