In Gulou District, along Yihe Road and Ninghai Road, there is a cluster of old residential buildings. These buildings were once the garden villas of embassies, high-ranking officials from the party, military, and wealthy individuals, as well as foreigners. Over 200 of these buildings are still well-preserved to this day, including the famous former site of the American Embassy.
This area has been known as the ‘Embassy District’ and the ‘Modern Architecture Model Area’. Walking amidst these century-old buildings that blend Chinese and Western architectural styles, one feels as if they have returned to the era of transition between the old and the new, where dreams were both vibrant and serene.
