The Yilan River originates from Mount Dajiaoxi and Mount Xiaojiaoxi in the Xue Mountain Range on the border between Jiaoxi Township, Yilan County and Wulai Township, New Taipei City
The main tributaries are Dajiaoxi, Xiaojiaoxi, Wushixi, etc

After these tributaries converge, they successively pass through Yilan City and Zhuangwei Township
Near the Kavalan Bridge not far from the estuary, it merges with the Lanyang River and flows into the Pacific Ocean
