Zheng’s Seventeen Houses

Zheng’s Seventeen Houses is located in Xie Pu Town, a well-preserved and large-scale complex of Ming and Qing dynasty buildings, which once belonged to the prominent merchant Zheng family. One of them is Zheng Zunfa, the founder of the Hero Ink Factory. Here, houses are interspersed with streets, and markets are nestled within, with towering horse-head walls that exude a distinct charm. This place has gained some fame for being the filming location of the TV drama ‘Zheng’s Seventeen Houses’. After renovation in 2013, it was transformed into the Kaiyuan Resort, and the admission fee for Zheng’s Seventeen Houses is now only one-third of the original. However, due to some old houses being converted into resort guest rooms, the number of visible landscapes has decreased. Currently, half of the area is open to tourists as a scenic spot, and the other half is exclusively for guests for accommodation and dining, with guests being able to visit the scenic area for free with their credentials. The scenic area is divided into two sections by a waterway, which can be quickly toured on foot without entering the rooms. The first place to visit upon entering the scenic area is the Zheng family’s ancestral hall. Further inside, one can see the kitchen from the past, which was intentionally left unrestored. The stone bases, stoves, and some ruins are exposed, with weeds growing on the walls, creating a visually striking scene. Beyond the bridge lies the Ming and Qing Street, which still retains many props used during filming due to its use as a filming base, including many creative tables and chairs. The streets and houses here have a distinct Ming and Qing charm, especially suitable for photography on good weather days. Some houses have been transformed into restaurants and exhibition halls, and the history of many famous houses can be understood through the plaques on their walls. Walking to the Yuanmao House marks the end of the scenic area, and crossing the bridge leads to the main entrance of the scenic spot, concluding the visit.
