Zhongyan Mountain

Zhongyan Mountain was originally named Baishi Mountain. It features majestic peaks, perilous ridges, deep gorges, ingenious stones, secluded caves and ancient temples. Moreover, it has abundant waters, beautiful waterfalls and lakes and peaks complementing each other. Amidst its lofty and magnificent appearance, there is also tenderness and charm. With its majestic masculinity, it also shows elegance and softness. It is a famous national scenic area. However, under the shadow of the fame of Beiyan Mountain, Zhongyan Mountain has long been like a beauty hidden in deep boudoir and known by few people. In the eyes of people in Yandang Mountain, Zhongyan Mountain and Beiyan Mountain are equally beautiful but with different charms. Having visited Beiyan Mountain but not Zhongyan Mountain cannot be considered as having truly toured Yandang. The three lakes of Zhongyan Mountain, namely Zhongqian Lake, Baishi Lake and Longshan Lake, are like three bright mirrors inlaid among the peaks in all seasons. Tourists can climb to the peak to overlook thousands of miles and watch the sunrise over the East China Sea. When taking a break, they can fish in the shade of willows and go boating on the blue waves. It can be said that it has both beautiful landscapes. People with benevolence and wisdom will all be so delighted that they forget to return. “Xiji of Zhongyan Mountain is an important scenic area. Following the gurgling water and entering the stone gate, one suddenly sees an open view. In the midst of numerous mountains and between the clouds, a plain suddenly appears, which is astonishingly a different world.” (Collected Works of Zai Jingtang – Landscape – Yandang Mountain). The contemporary famous couplet artist Chen Zhisui’s couplet for Shimen of Xiji: “Entering the gate, there is a peach blossom realm; Dividing the water, it is remotely connected to the rice village.” is an image description of the “peach blossom world” inside the stone gate. Zhongyan Mountain governs seven major scenic areas including Yuzeng, Xiji, Sanhu, Dongji, Phoenix Mountain, Yangbadong and Liugonggu. With a total area of 93.44 square kilometers and more than 300 scenic spots, it is famous for majestic peaks and perilous ridges, flying waterfalls and flowing springs, secluded caves and ancient temples, and beautiful lakes and mountains. Scholars and refined people through the ages have been attracted to come here and left a large number of precious inscriptions, adding luster to the mountain scenery. Wang Shipeng of the Song Dynasty also wrote: “The ten-mile lake and mountain are like horizontal emerald eyebrows, and the two streams are like jade chimes clinking.”
