Zoumatang Ancient Village

Zoumatang Ancient Village is a worthwhile ancient village to visit around Ningbo. This small village has produced 76 Jinshi (advanced scholars) since the Northern Song Dynasty. The village retains a large number of Ming and Qing dynasty buildings that are worth savoring in detail. Many subtle carvings are particularly striking and are one of the highlights of the village. It has not been fully developed yet, preserving a simple and honest folk culture.

When you arrive at Zoumatang, the first thing that catches your eye is a lotus pond at the entrance of the village. In summer, when the lotus flowers bloom, the green leaves and red flowers set against the backdrop of white walls and black tiles, resembling an ink painting. There are hidden stone paths in the pond where visitors can walk in and take photos among the layered lotus leaves, exuding an artistic vibe.

Upon entering the village, the mast-like horse-head walls and the high eaves of the Ming and Qing buildings are always photogenic. Another commendable aspect is the crisscrossing water system in the village, which can withstand drought and fire. Due to the relatively few tourists here throughout the year, you may encounter some old houses with tightly closed doors. However, exploring along the stone paths of the ancient village often leads to pleasant surprises. For instance, some old houses still have early slogans on their doors, and the intricate patterns carved on stone windows are still clearly visible. The old architecture of the ancestral halls also retains its original appearance. If you pay attention to the corners of the roads, you will find that even the scattered stone stools are old items with a long history.

The entire village is open all year round, 24/7, with specific business hours subject to daily opening conditions.
