Fortaleza do Monte

Fortaleza do Monte, located on the Guia Hill near the Ruins of St. Paul’s, was built in 1616 and is one of the important historical sites in Macau. It once served as the core of Macau’s defense system, creating a network of artillery defenses covering the eastern and western coasts. The fort is an irregular quadrilateral with four corner bastions, walls approximately 9 meters high, capable of housing over thirty cannons to withstand attacks from all directions. Today, Fortaleza do Monte has become a popular tourist destination, with a large green space in front where visitors can enjoy panoramic views of Macau. It is open all year round from 07:00 to 19:00, with the actual operating status subject to the day’s opening conditions. Essential tips: 1. Please wear comfortable shoes to facilitate climbing the slopes. 2. There are no railings around Fortaleza do Monte, only signs, which can be somewhat dangerous, so visitors with children should be particularly cautious. 3. Out of respect for cultural heritage, please do not sit on the ancient cannons or damage them recklessly.
