Zhou’s Filiality and Chastity Arch

The Zhou’s Filiality and Chastity Arch is located at the entrance of No. 36, Section 1, Fengnian Road, Beitou District. It was constructed in honor of Mrs. Zhou, who, after the early death of her husband, upheld her chastity and raised her children alone. She served her in-laws with utmost filial piety. Her steadfast and virtuous deeds were reported by Chen Weiying, a scholar of the Inner Court, who petitioned the throne for recognition. Consequently, an imperial decree was issued to erect the arch in her honor. The arch was established in the 23rd year of the Guangxu period (AD 1897), but the upper two levels collapsed due to a major earthquake. In recent years, it has been restored and now stands as a significant landmark in the area. The arch serves as a reminder to the world of the importance of filial piety. It is open all year round, accessible 24 hours a day, with specific operational status subject to daily opening conditions.
